At the end of the 12 weeks, the top 3 players in the League will automatically win a seat to the National Final,

If you don’t automatically win a seat to the National Final but come in the top 50 players in the league you’ll be invited to take part in a local league play off final.

Edinburgh UKIPT Season 3 Dates Announced

by Martin Smith on 10/02/2012

The Season 3 schedule for the UKIPT has been announced.  You can see all the details on http://www.ukipt.com/tournaments but the most important thing to note is that the Edinburgh stop will be from 17th-21st January 2013.  The venue has moved to the Balmoral Hotel away from the Corn Exchange.  The buy-in for all main events has been increased this season to £770.

The UKIPT Edinburgh events in 2010 and 2011 were very successful and PokerStars did a great job with the whole tour.  I think there are some issues with Season 3 that will hurt the local turnout though.

I emailed PokerStars to let them know my concerns and got a speedy reply which is standard from their excellent support staff.  Here are my points along with Stars’ replies:

1. The first 2 seasons of the UKIPT were very popular and successful in Scotland, where I live.  There was one Scottish event in each season, both times in Edinburgh. The timing of the Scottish Season 3 event (Jan 2013) will mean that a gap of almost 1.5 years will have passed between Scottish events which I think is a real shame and a long time to wait.  Did the UKIPT consider holding a Scottish event sooner or even running 2 Scottish events in Season 3 with one in another big poker city like Glasgow, Dundee or Aberdeen?
PokerStars reply: “It is unfortunate that there is an 18 month gap between Scottish events but Edinburgh is a popular place and trying to find a viable space and hotel for a poker tournament for 500+ players can be quite tricky, even 1+ years in advance.. Unfortunately there are many factors to take into consideration when we schedule our events and sometimes anomalies can occur in the schedule of our tournaments, particularly when we need to change the time of year that an event is held. We always look at all options when planning our schedule including other cities in Scotland but they proved not to be a viable proposition at this moment in time.

2. The buy-ins in Season 3 have increased from £500 to £700 (excluding rake).  This is going to price out a lot of amateur poker players in Scotland which is disappointing.  The £500 price was pretty much perfect before.  Can you say why it was increased?
PokerStars reply: “The buy-in level was increased having taken into consideration many players feedback provided during Seasons 1 & 2. We have made every effort to increase our online satellite offerings to help ensure that no one is priced out of being able to participate in a UKIPT. This has had great success thus far and we have seen over 400 players already registered for our first stop, UKIPT Galway which is a five fold increase from Season 2. As ever we will continue to collate feedback throughout the year and constantly re-assess our strategy as the Season progresses.”

3. The rake at the Edinburgh tournament is higher than at some other locations. If it costs more to run a tournament in Edinburgh vs another location then I think it’s fair to charge more rake. However, I think rake should always be completely clear and transparent to the players. In Edinburgh we are effectively playing a £679+£91 tournament. This is because in addition to the £70 stated rake there is an additional 3% rake taken from all buy-ins.  This works out at 13.4%.  As I said before I wouldn’t mind paying this if that’s what it costs BUT I think you should say £679+£91 on the website and not hide away the extra 3% with an asterisk.  It’s just good practice to be completely open and up front and to display all the information for each stop on the same basis.  I am handing over £770 but only £679 goes into the prize pool.  I just think that should be 100% clear.  I’d actually recommend that £700 goes into the prize pool and you state the tournament as £700+£91 (a higher total amount for the player but much more clear). Would you consider changing how this is displayed on the UKIPT website?
PokerStars reply: “The rake in Edinburgh is identical to all stops which are held outside of a casino. The entire 3% goes directly to the dealing and floor staff and goes someway towards recouping the costs of paying, housing and feeding upwards of 50 dealers for a week long period. The 3% fee is not rake and none of this money goes to PokerStars and that is an important differential as this is an important part of ensuring we attract the best dealers in Europe to help ensure what we feel is an optimal playing experience for players. FYI, this is generally the way these contributions are displayed at our events world wide and is a standard for our live events team.

4. I think the change of location for the Edinburgh stop to the Balmoral Hotel is a good move as a city centre location will work well.  Good work on that!
PokerStars reply: “Thanks. I’m excited for Edinburgh and I really think the Balmoral will be a fantastic venue for players of all ranges.

Dusk Til Dawn £560 Deepstack Trip Report

by Nicol MacPherson on 07/01/2012

Here are the key hands I played in Day 1A of the £500+£60 Super Deepstack tournament at Dusk Til Dawn Nottingham on 6th January 2012.

Blinds 50/100. Starting stack 30k with a 40 min clock.
At a table with Luke Schwartz, his pal (who clearly wants him) and bunch of fish.

Hand 1
Asian fish limps and I raise AJo. The flop is King high, I bet and he calls. Check/check on the blank turn. He bets the double pair river but I call and Ace high is good.

Hand 2
I raise 86hh from the cut off and get 2 callers. The Flop is 73xss, I c-bet and get check-raised. I 3-bet, he 4-bets, I 5-bet, he 6-bet jams and I fold. Down to 20k.

Blinds 75/150

Hand 3
I value-bet a Ten high flush vs Schwartz. He calls with one pair. At 20k.

Hand 4
I raise 54o from early position, the flop comes 882, I bet and get one caller. The turn is a 9, I bet bigish and get called again. The river is another 9, I bet near pot, he shoves all in and I fold. He shows quads!

Moved tables
Blinds 100/200

Hand 5
I have A5cc in the SB and limp. There were already 2 limpers in the pot so we are 4-way to the flop which is Q95cc. I bet and get 1 caller. Turn is another Q, I check (intending to check-raise) but he checks back. The river is a 9, I check, he bets 3/4 pot and I snap-call. He shows Q9ss for a full house.

Blinds 200/400
Fold for an hour, 10k left exactly.

Hand 6
I get J8ss in the SB. The Button (a decent player) min-raises and I call. The flop is QT9 (second nuts for me) and I bet 3/4 pot. He puts me all in (9k more) and I call. He shows AT and I double up.

Hand 7
I min-raise 99 UTG and get 2 callers. The flop comes QJ4 and we check round. The turn is a second Queen, the BB bets and I call. The river a Ten, he bets 3k with 8k left. I shove and he folds flashing a Queen!

Blinds 300/600

Hand 8
I raise AK from early position and get 1 caller (an Internet guy type but decent player). Flop KQ4, I check to under rep my hand. Turn is 9 and I check/call 2.2k. My plan is to check-raise a brick on the river. The river does indeed bring a brick and I check-raise to 9k. He shoves for 16k more and I snap-call. He has 10 high!

Blinds 400/800

Hand 9
I have K9 on the Button, an old guy raises and I call in position. The fish in the BB also calls. The flop is A95 and I bet 3/4 pot, the fish calls. Turn is a 3 and it goes check/check. The river is an 8 and he bets 3/4 pot. I call and he shows 67o for a gutshot on the flop and a double bell buster on the turn which came in.

Blinds 600/1200

Hand 10
Young good aggro player raises, I have 98o in position and 3-bet, he calls. The flop is QQ6, he bets and I call as a float. Queen on the turn, he checks, I bet 1/2 pot and he folds. I show and he says he had 75dd.

Hand 11
I raise AKo UTG, 1 guy calls then another player tilt-shoves 23k with JTdd. I call but lose when the flop obviously comes JJx.

Blinds 800/1600

Hand 12
I raise 93cc in the cut-off and a fish calls. He donks out on the A74cc flop and I call. When a 7 comes on the turn he bets and I call as a float. The river brings a 4, he bets again and I min-raise. He insta folds!

Hand 13
I have QJdd in the SB, the Button limps and I also limp but the BB squeezes to 3k and I call. The flop is J82hh and he bets 7k which I call. The turn is the 7h, he bets 17k and I call again. The river is a King and it goes check/check. He has 52o and I take it down.

I have around 90k now

Hand 14
I min-raise KK UTG and get 4 callers. The flop comes down AK4, I bet 3.5k and 1 fish calls. The turn is a Ten, I bet 7.5k and he calls. The river is a brick, I bet 17k and he insta-ships for 10k more. I call but he has QJo for the straight and I’m down to about 23k.

Hand 15
I win a limped pot with 1 pair vs some stoned idiot. I hero-called the river.

Hands 16 & 17
I get 2 shoves SB v BB through and I’m up to 34k.

Hand 18
I min-raise QQ UTG, the BB ships for the same stack as me and I snap-call. He has KQ but I bust out when the flop comes JT9. Pretty standard run good all ins.

I’m now having a go at the £50 freezeout.  Good luck to me.
